KANSAS CITY — September baseball leaves little room for prolonged frustration, especially when a division title remains within reach.
The Chicago White Sox entered Thursday needing a response after losing 5–4 to Kansas City the previous afternoon.
They delivered one emphatically.
Chicago defeated the Royals 9–1, improving to 82–77 and remaining one game behind Cleveland in the American League Central race.
The White Sox didn't leave much doubt about the outcome. Their nine-run performance gave the pitching staff substantial support, while Kansas City managed only one run.
David Sandlin received credit for the victory as Chicago avoided losing consecutive games during the final week of the regular season.
The result matters because the White Sox have put themselves in a position where games in late September carry genuine consequences.
A franchise that has spent recent seasons searching for its footing is now competing for postseason positioning.
Chicago isn't guaranteed anything yet.
But with three games remaining, the White Sox have an opportunity to finish the season with a winning record and continue their pursuit of October baseball.
Colorado was the opponent for the final three-game series at Rate Field.
At this stage of the schedule, there's no advantage in dwelling on missed opportunities.
Chicago needs to keep winning.
Thursday's performance was exactly the response the White Sox needed.
