CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox entered Saturday with an opportunity to keep their late-season momentum rolling.
Colorado had other plans.
The Rockies defeated Chicago 9–6 at Rate Field, handing the White Sox a costly setback during the final weekend of the regular season.
The loss dropped Chicago to 83–78.
Davis Martin was charged with the defeat, while Ryan Feltner earned the victory for Colorado.
Chicago scored six runs, enough to win plenty of games. But the Rockies produced nine, turning the matchup into another reminder that offensive production means little without sufficient pitching and defensive support.
The defeat also complicated the White Sox's pursuit of the American League Central title.
Chicago has spent September attempting to close the gap on Cleveland. With the season nearly complete, opportunities to make up ground have become increasingly limited.
Losing to a Colorado club already buried in the National League standings was not the result Chicago wanted.
The defeat left the White Sox with one regular-season game remaining at the conclusion of Saturday’s contest.
Regardless of the ultimate postseason picture, Saturday offered a reminder of the standard required to compete in October.
Strong teams need to finish games, limit damage and capitalize on favorable matchups.
Chicago did not do enough of that against Colorado.
